Anxiety and Panic

What are the symptoms?
The symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety, some of the symptoms include the following:-
Anxiety is a normal human emotion that we all experience from time to time. It is a necessary emotion and can help you out in situations where you need it. For example, if you almost fall down a flight of stairs you are familiar with the stress response you immediately get, such as a rapid heartbeat, and being able to relax quickly when you realize that you are safe.
Anxiety becomes problematic when it starts to interfere with your daily life; that is, when you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety when they are not necessary. When feelings of dread and worry are unfocused, overwhelming, recurring, and not directly linked to stressful events, anxiety will leave you severely impaired. When anxiety interferes with daily function, the support of a counsellor or psychotherapist can often be helpful.

What is Anxiety
Anxiety, not unlike the fight, flight or freeze response  is a survival mechanism that allows you to protect yourselve in order to avoid suffering, but sometimes a person repeatedly and unnecessarily experiences extreme levels of the fear and worry associated with anxiety and feels helpless to alleviate the symptoms.

A person’s predisposition toward anxiety is based both in biology and environment. In other words, anxious behaviors may be inherited, learned or both. For example, research demonstrates that anxious children are likely born to anxious parents, but those parents may also model anxious tendencies, such as avoiding or fearing potential threats, that then instill the same fear and avoidant behaviors in their children. Growing up in a stressful environment may also predispose someone to anxiety because anxiety becomes a way to anticipate danger and ensure safety.
Anxiety can also develop as a result of unresolved trauma that leaves a person in a heightened physiological state of arousal; when this is the case, certain experiences may reactivate the old trauma, as is common for people experiencing post-traumatic stress. (PTSD).

What are the symptoms of Anxiety?

Physical symptoms:-
  • Palpitations
  • chest pains
  • faintness
  • being flushed
  • sweating
  • shortness of breath
  • hyperventilation
  • choking
  • difficulties in breathing
  • dry mouth
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • vertigo, tremors
  • restlessness
  • panic attacks
  • sense of fear.
Psychological symptoms:-
  • Things around you appearing unreal
  • sounds being distorted
  • speeding or slowing of thoughts
  • tension
  • distractibility
  • insomnia
  • anxiety concern for others.


How can counselling help?
  • Helps you to develop your own coping mechanisms in order to deal with anxiety and strategies to overcome negative thinking patterns.
  • Exploring any possible underlying issues causing or maintaining the symptoms.
  • Learning how to react to situations differently and changing the way you interact with the thoughts in your head.
  • Learning how to activate the rest response of the nervous and therefore calming down the nervous system.
